Miami International Airport (MIA) is undergoing significant upgrades as part of its Modernization in Action (M.I.A) plan. This initiative aims to prepare the airport for future growth by renovating various facilities, including passenger jet bridges, escalators, walkways, and public restrooms. The $9-billion project will be executed in phases over the next several years.

The airport's statistics reveal its status as a major hub: MIA ranks first among the fastest-growing U.S. airports and serves 190,000 passengers and employees daily. In 2023, it accommodated 52.3 million passengers. The modernization efforts aim to address maintenance challenges that currently affect less than 10% of operating systems like elevators and escalators on an average day.

Under Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's leadership, the airport is striving to become "future ready." According to Miami Airport officials, "We appreciate your patience while the M.I.A. Plan makes traveling through MIA easier than ever before."

Passenger numbers have been rising steadily post-pandemic. Kevin Marino Cabrera noted that passenger traffic is already up by 10% compared to last year. Ralph Cutié, Director and CEO of Miami International Airport, expressed optimism about this trend: "We find three straight years of record-making passenger growth."

The modernization plan includes upgrading or replacing many conveyances at the airport with a focus on accessibility improvements for differently-abled individuals. To date, eight elevator units have been completed out of a planned total of 38 units set for modernization in 2023 and 2024.

Supply chain issues have posed challenges for the project timeline, with some parts taking up to eight months to arrive due to delays. However, work continues on multiple fronts within the seven-year schedule.

Public restroom renovations are also underway across all concourses at MIA in three phases scheduled through 2030. As part of these upgrades, sustainable designs featuring touchless fixtures are being implemented.

Additional projects include refurbishing all passenger boarding bridges at MIA along with enhancements such as pre-conditioned air units and communication equipment upgrades.

Other ongoing initiatives involve installing an automated parking system equipped with cameras and sensors alongside perimeter fence security enhancements funded by TSA.

New digital signage installations at D-60 gates will display gate numbers along with destination information efficiently—further contributing towards operational improvements at Miami International Airport during this transformative period.
