Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, handles over 50 million passengers annually. The airport has recently expanded its International Arrivals Facility (IAF) to accommodate increasing international passenger numbers and improve overall passenger experience.
The new IAF, unveiled in 2022, replaces a 50-year-old structure and nearly doubles the number of international gates from 12 to 20. It increases passenger capacity to more than double at 2,600 passengers per hour and incorporates advanced technology for faster passport clearance. Additionally, it increases baggage carousels from four to seven and reduces minimum connection time from 90 minutes to 75 minutes.
The design was led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a Chicago-based firm. The facility includes a Grand Hall for baggage claim and customs processing and an international corridor connecting arriving passengers on the A Concourse. Notably, it features an aerial walkway that is "an all-new welcome to our region," according to Lance Lyttle, Managing Director of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
