The SAAB JAS 39 Gripen is a prominent multi-role fighter jet developed by the Swedish aerospace and defense company SAAB. Known for its performance, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability, the Gripen has been integrated into the air forces of several countries.

SAAB, founded in 1937, has established itself as a leading manufacturer of military aircraft. The Gripen program began in the 1980s to provide Sweden with a flexible fighter aircraft suitable for various conditions. The first prototype flew in 1988, and by 1993 it entered service with the Swedish Air Force. Over time, SAAB introduced new versions like the Gripen C/D models in the early 2000s and later, the advanced Gripen E model in 2017.

Several countries have adopted this aircraft due to its technology and operational costs. Sweden remains its largest operator. Brazil has ordered dozens of Gripen E aircraft as part of modernizing its fleet. The Czech Republic was among the first outside Sweden to operate these jets. Hungary uses them for NATO defense commitments while South Africa employs them for air defense and ground support missions. Thailand also includes them as part of their defense strategy.

While not a full operator, "the UK has used Gripen aircraft for training and exercises," highlighting its versatility among NATO partners.

The popularity of this fighter jet is attributed to factors such as cost-efficiency compared to larger fighters like F-35s, versatility across different mission types, impressive safety record, and ability to operate from short airstrips.
