Turkish low-cost airline AJet, previously known as AnadoluJet, is seeking to lease up to 36 aircraft due to delays in the delivery of Boeing's MAX series. Initially expecting these planes in 2025, the airline is now exploring alternatives with Airbus aircraft likely being considered.

The CEO of AJet, Kerem Sarp, mentioned that the company is engaged in discussions with lessors and considering both leasing and purchasing options. "We're in talks with lessors to provide 36 jets next year, with Airbus aircraft mainly in focus. We are looking to leasing and purchasing options," he stated in an interview with Reuters.

AJet plans a growth rate of 13% for its available seats per kilometer (ASK) and aims to serve 23 million passengers by 2025. However, due to delays in receiving the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, AJet is turning to Airbus models as a substitute. Sarp added, "We were expecting to be delivered 36 Boeing jets next year. But we are facing delays for the deliveries due to problems at Boeing."

Operating independently since January after acquiring its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC), AJet maintains a dual-hub model from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport and Ankara Esenboga Airport. Currently, it operates eight Boeing 737-800s under its own AOC while managing over 100 planes registered under Turkish Airlines.

Turkish Airlines itself has ongoing negotiations for up to 150 new Boeing jets and has ordered over 190 Airbus A321neos, some destined for AJet.

Boeing experienced significant production issues throughout 2024, starting with a plug door blowout incident involving Alaska Airlines' MAX series and later compounded by a machinist strike halting production entirely. Production has resumed following the strike's conclusion on November 4th, but only after retraining staff and focusing on quality control measures.

Boeing aims to return production levels to their target of 38 airframes per month by May 2025.
