Avianca has announced plans to introduce five new routes to the United States, expanding its services to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa. The Colombian airline shared this development on Facebook on December 27, stating its intention to commence flights from Bogota El Dorado International Airport to Tampa International Airport, Medellín Jose Maria Cordova International Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Managua Augusto C. Sandino International Airport to Fort Lauderdale, San Jose Juan Santamaria International Airport to Miami International Airport, and Guatemala City La Aurora International Airport to Miami.

The launch of these routes is pending governmental approval. Currently, Avianca's booking engine does not list these new itineraries. For instance, travelers can currently book a one-stop itinerary between Tampa and Bogota with a stop in Fort Lauderdale operated by Silver Airways using ATR 42 aircraft. Similarly, the Medellín to Fort Lauderdale route includes a stop in Bogota and is flown by Avianca's Airbus A320 aircraft starting in April.

During a media session in December, Avianca CEO Frederico Pedreira hinted at the upcoming announcement of new routes to Florida. Pedreira noted that while their US-bound network began slowly in 2024, it gained momentum as the year progressed. He emphasized that Avianca's current cost structure allows profitability on routes that were previously unprofitable.

“So, you have a fair amount of passengers from the United States that are price conscious and we are achieving the right price on these flights,” said Pedreira.

Avianca is also focusing on attracting more upscale travelers within the Americas. On October 16, the airline announced a business class offering on its Airbus A320 aircraft across 34 routes. This product features seats with greater reclining options and other amenities such as adjustable headrests and charging ports.

Despite these expansions, data from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning system indicates that Avianca will face competition on all but one of its new routes: Bogota to Tampa. Other airlines like American Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines already serve some of these destinations.

American Airlines plans up to 28 weekly flights from Miami to San Jose and triple-daily services from Miami to Guatemala City in 2025. Frontier Airlines has scheduled limited operations from Miami to Guatemala City for late 2024 but may not continue them into 2025.

Spirit Airlines' schedule shows flights from Fort Lauderdale to Managua through early 2025 but might drop this route amid ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. Both JetBlue and Spirit plan flights from Fort Lauderdale to Medellín with varying frequencies throughout early next year.
