China Eastern Airlines is set to introduce the COMAC C919 on its flights to Hong Kong International Airport, marking the aircraft's first scheduled service outside mainland China. Starting in 2025, the airline will replace the Airbus A321 with the C919 for flights MU721 and MU722 between Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Hong Kong.

The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) previously showcased the C919 in Hong Kong in December 2023, where it conducted a demonstration flight over the Special Administrative Region. Following this, the aircraft participated in test flights and an aerial display at the Singapore Airshow before embarking on a tour across Southeast Asia.

COMAC has been actively engaging with airlines across Asia to promote the C919 as a competitor to established models like Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX 8. Discussions have been held with executives from Garuda Indonesia, Angkor Air, and SCAT Airlines about potential purchases of the Chinese-manufactured aircraft.

Currently, three Chinese airlines—Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines—operate C919s exclusively within mainland China. In January alone, these carriers scheduled a total of 354 weekly flights using the aircraft. Among them, China Eastern leads with nine planes dedicated to domestic routes.

The introduction of C919 services to Hong Kong represents a significant step for COMAC as it seeks to expand its presence internationally. While GallopAir from Brunei is currently the only non-Chinese airline to order the C919, further international interest could follow as COMAC continues its efforts abroad.
