Colombian airline Avianca is planning a significant expansion in the United States in 2025. The Bogota-based carrier has announced five proposed routes, each aiming to introduce new nonstop flights from Florida to Latin America.

Avianca plans to launch its first-ever service from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and add direct links between South Florida and destinations in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Colombia. "Florida has historically been a key gateway for connections to Latin America, which is why it is essential for us to contribute to reuniting families, boosting tourism, and promoting business," said Avianca CEO Frederico Pedreira.

1. TPA to El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogota, Colombia: This will provide the Tampa Bay region with its first Avianca service and a direct link to South America.

2. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (MDE) in Medellin, Colombia: Fort Lauderdale would become the fourth U.S. city with an Avianca nonstop flight to Medellin. JetBlue and Spirit Airlines currently operate this route.

3. Miami International Airport (MIA) to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica: Avianca last operated this route in 2022. It will compete with American Airlines on this path.

4. Miami to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, Guatemala: This route was also last flown by Avianca in 2022 and currently has American as the sole operator.

5. Fort Lauderdale to Managua (and onto San Salvador): Proposed service between Fort Lauderdale and Managua includes a continuation from Managua's Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport (MGA) to El Salvador International Airport (SAL). Spirit Airlines is currently the only U.S. airline serving FLL-Managua regularly.

In 2024, Avianca increased its total seats available for U.S.-bound flights by nearly 25% over 2023 levels according to aviation analytics firm Cirium data. The carrier finished 2024 with eight new destinations across its network.

The airline's LifeMiles loyalty program continues offering multiple credit card reward transfer options enabling domestic U.S flyers access cheap award tickets on United or other Star Alliance partners like Air Canada.
