Lufthansa is encountering delays in the delivery of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners as it awaits certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its new Allegris cabin. The delay was confirmed by Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr at an internal event on December 17, according to Der Spiegel.

Spohr noted that Boeing has 13 Dreamliners ready for delivery, with six equipped with the Allegris seats. However, these seats have not yet received FAA approval. Lufthansa is collaborating with several suppliers, including Stelia Aerospace, Collins Aerospace, Thompson Aero, Zim Aircraft Seating, and Recaro Aircraft Seating to furnish different classes within the Allegris cabin.

The Allegris cabin has been introduced on Lufthansa's Airbus A350s. On November 9, 2024, an A350-900 equipped with first-class suites made its inaugural flight to Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport. Supply chain issues previously led to some aircraft entering service without these suites.

Initially launched in 2022, Lufthansa aimed to retrofit its intercontinental fleet with the Allegris cabins by the end of 2025 but now targets completion by the end of 2027 due to various challenges including supply chain disruptions and weight distribution complications.

Lufthansa currently operates five Boeing 787-9 aircraft and awaits delivery of an additional 34 units. These Dreamliners can accommodate up to 294 passengers across business class, premium economy, and economy configurations.

Engine reliability concerns have also surfaced for future deliveries of Boeing 787s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Lufthansa is considering a switch to GE Aerospace GEnx engines for these aircraft following similar decisions by other airlines like British Airways.
