London Heathrow Airport, the busiest in the United Kingdom, is experiencing a surge in traffic this December as travelers head out for the holidays. According to data from Cirium, 39,527 flights are scheduled at Heathrow this month, providing 8,673,847 seats and 22,072,907,948 available seat miles (ASMs). The Airbus A320 family is leading the charge with a significant share of these operations.

British Airways dominates Heathrow's passenger traffic and operates a large fleet of Airbus narrowbodies. Consequently, the Airbus A320 family accounts for over 56% of Heathrow's traffic this December with 22,146 flights. In terms of seating capacity and ASMs offered by these aircraft, they account for 45% and 12%, respectively.

The top variants within the A320 family include the A320 with 7,668 flights and the A320neo with 7,392 flights. British Airways is responsible for most of these operations with 15,029 flights.

Boeing's widebody twinjets also feature prominently at Heathrow this month. The Boeing 777 leads among widebodies with 5,123 flights offering substantial seating capacity and ASMs. British Airways remains a key operator here as well.

Following closely is Boeing's Dreamliner series—the Boeing 787—with a total of 4,297 scheduled flights at Heathrow in December. Again led by British Airways' operations alongside Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines.

In terms of Airbus widebody aircraft at Heathrow this December, the A350 series stands out with its presence marked by British Airways' operations followed by other carriers like Virgin Atlantic.

Heathrow will also see significant activity from Airbus’s superjumbo jet—the A380—with six airlines operating it on various routes throughout December.

While some aircraft families have less than a thousand flights scheduled at Heathrow this month—such as Boeing’s narrowbody competitor to the A320—the Boeing 737 still manages to make its mark despite fewer numbers compared to its rival models from Airbus.
