American Airlines has added a new Boeing 737 MAX 8 to its fleet, registered as N315UA. This tail number was previously used by United Airlines. The aircraft joined American's fleet on December 24, 2024, as part of the airline's ongoing expansion efforts.

The aircraft was ferried from Boeing Field in Seattle to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on December 24. Flight AA9825 departed at 12:35 local time and arrived in Dallas at 18:05 local time.

The registration number N315UA was once associated with a United Airlines Boeing 737-300, which flew for the airline from December 1987 until it was retired and scrapped in late 2009. Aviation enthusiasts have noted this reuse of a tail number with interest.

JonNYC, an aviation analyst, suggested that American Airlines might have chosen this specific registration due to limitations in its existing pool of numbers following a merger. He mentioned that the airline likely wanted to maintain a certain nose number but had limited options.

The new Boeing 737 MAX 8 is American’s 66th delivery of this model. It features a cabin with three sections: Main Cabin, Main Cabin Extra, and First Class. Passengers can expect amenities such as Wi-Fi and power outlets throughout the cabin.

As of late 2024, American Airlines operates 64 out of its total fleet of 66 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, with two parked. The airline plans to receive six more MAX 8s soon. In March 2024, American ordered additional narrowbody planes, including the larger variant Boeing 737 MAX 10s.
