Fishtown, a neighborhood in North Philadelphia, has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Originally a small fishing village in the 1700s, Fishtown evolved into a working-class hub of the commercial shad-fishing industry over two centuries. By the 1990s and early 2000s, the area experienced economic decline. However, around ten years ago, it began to transform with new businesses like beer halls, yoga studios, and La Colombe's flagship coffee shop.
The neighborhood is now known for its vibrant live music scene with venues such as The Fillmore and Johnny Brenda's. It also boasts award-winning restaurants like Kalaya, whose chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon received a James Beard Award in 2023. In addition to culinary offerings, Fishtown hosts unique ventures like Philadelphia's first cheese vending machine and an urban winery.
Beyoncé has reportedly ordered her birthday cake from Cake Life Bake Shop multiple times. The August 2024 opening of Hotel Anna & Bel further established Fishtown as a destination. This boutique hotel offers amenities such as an in-house Mediterranean restaurant and cocktail bar.
