Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) is set to reintroduce double daily Airbus A380 flights from Tokyo Narita to Honolulu starting in July 2025. This move, which will last through November 2025, will see the Airbus A380 completely replace the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on this route, according to data from aviation analytics company Cirium.

The airline's decision will increase its Airbus A380 operations in Hawaii. The additional daily flight will transition by June 15, 2025. Meanwhile, ANA's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will continue to serve the Tokyo Haneda to Honolulu route. ANA maintains a significant fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with 44 Boeing 787-9s, 34 Boeing 787-8s, and seven larger capacity Boeing 787-10s.

ANA's Airbus A380 aircraft are exclusively used on routes between Tokyo Narita Airport and Honolulu. These planes are themed as "FLYING HONU," inspired by Hawaiian sea turtles, featuring distinct liveries. The three A380 aircraft in ANA's fleet have an average age of 5.9 years and can accommodate up to 520 passengers across four classes.

The Tokyo to Honolulu route holds significant value for Japan as it represents a popular destination for travelers from East Asia. All Nippon Airways aims to expand its service offerings due to increasing demand at the airport. In addition to ANA, Japan Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines also provide nonstop service between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu. Japan Airlines and Delta Air Lines serve the nonstop route from Tokyo Haneda to Honolulu.

"Over the past two decades, experience has shown that scaling operations is often the most effective way to operate the Airbus A380 aircraft profitably," notes industry observers regarding ANA's strategic decision.
