Malaysia Airlines has grounded its first Airbus A330-900neo following technical issues after just two round-trip flights. The aircraft encountered engine and hydraulic system complications during its inaugural passenger flight to Melbourne on December 19, 2024, as reported by Aviation2Z. These issues forced an early return, and further problems led to the grounding of the aircraft upon its return to Kuala Lumpur. This resulted in the cancellation of flight MH149 to Melbourne on December 21.

Izham Ismail, Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group, identified three significant technical defects in the newly delivered aircraft. He attributed these issues to flaws in manufacturing quality control and delivery processes. "The situation raises serious concerns about manufacturing oversight at Airbus," he stated, urging Airbus and Rolls-Royce to investigate and address these deficiencies promptly.

In an interview with the New Straits Times, Ismail expressed his frustration over the defects, describing them as unacceptable for a new aircraft. He highlighted the reputational damage caused to Malaysia Airlines due to factory-related quality issues. Ismail emphasized that such problems undermine the airline's commitment to maintaining high safety standards.

The grounding was initially set for 48 hours; however, a scheduled rotation to Melbourne on December 23 was also canceled. The grounded A330-900neo features a two-class layout with business-class seats arranged in a herringbone configuration and economy-class seats with extended legroom. It is part of an order for 20 A330-900neo jets intended to replace Malaysia Airlines' aging A330-300 fleet.

The aircraft, registered as 9M-MNG, was delivered from Toulouse on November 29, 2024, and introduced into service during a ceremony at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on December 19.
