A Horizon Air Embraer E175 flight operated for Alaska Airlines experienced a bird strike shortly after departing from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The incident occurred on December 24, as the aircraft was en route to Fairbanks International Airport. Reports indicate that an eagle collided with the plane during its ascent, prompting the pilots to return to Anchorage as a precautionary measure.

Passengers were informed about the bird strike and reassured that the decision to return was made out of caution. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely without any injuries reported among passengers. However, the eagle involved in the incident sustained severe injuries, including an open fracture on its left wing.

The injured eagle was taken to the Alaska Bird Treatment and Learning Center (BIRD TLC) in Anchorage for assessment. Laura Atwood, Executive Director of Bird TLC, stated that due to the severity of the wing damage, rehabilitation was not possible, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize the bird.

The aircraft underwent inspection following its grounding but has since returned to service. Passengers continued their journey to Fairbanks on an alternative plane.

Bird strikes are not uncommon in aviation and often result in precautionary measures such as returning flights. In recent months, similar incidents have been reported involving various airlines. Notably, a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 encountered a bird strike near Nashville Airport in November. That same month saw a KLM Airbus A330 returning to Amsterdam after both engines ingested birds shortly after takeoff.

Among historical incidents, US Airways flight 1549 is well-remembered for successfully landing on the Hudson River following a severe bird strike in 2009.
