Electronic warfare has become a significant aspect of military strategy, evolving since World War II and gaining momentum during the Vietnam War. The U.S. Air Force's EA-37B Compass Call and the U.S. Navy's EA-18G Growler are modern aircraft designed for electronic warfare missions, including signal intelligence, jamming, and electronic attacks.

The EA-37B is noted for its advanced signal processing capabilities that allow real-time analysis and disruption of enemy communications. According to the Air & Space Forces Magazine, it represents a major advancement in electronic attack capabilities. The Gulfstream-based Compass Call can adapt quickly to changing battlefield conditions.

The EA-18G Growler is equipped with multiple jamming pods and advanced avionics systems, allowing it to conduct both offensive and defensive electronic attacks. Its integration into NATO operations has been crucial in addressing electronic warfare gaps, as highlighted by the Air & Space Forces Magazine.

Both aircraft are fitted with Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures (IDECM) systems made by L3Harris. These systems enable extensive jamming and signal intelligence capabilities across a wide radio frequency spectrum. The EA-37B also features advanced communication systems for real-time coordination with other military units.

The Growler employs the AN/ALQ-218 system from Northrop Grumman and ALQ-99 jamming pods for effective suppression of enemy air defenses. Boeing states that its EW suite allows the Navy to assert air superiority.

The Compass Call offers greater range and crew capacity compared to the Growler but lacks its kinetic armament punch. Offutt Air Force Base will host the new generation of Compass Calls, described as flexible platforms with extended range for sustained operations over vast distances.

As older EC-130H Hercules aircraft retire, new Gulfstream G550-based EA-37Bs enter service. Meanwhile, ongoing upgrades aim to enhance both aircraft's capabilities against emerging technologies.
