A recent Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch to Hamilton was forced to return due to engine issues. The incident occurred on December 29, during a scheduled domestic service operated by an ATR 72-600 aircraft, one of the types extensively used by the airline.

The flight, designated as NZ5622, departed Christchurch Airport at 18:22, slightly delayed from its original schedule. The aircraft reached a cruising altitude of 17,000 feet before encountering engineering problems over Blenheim. The pilot decided to turn back to Christchurch as a precautionary measure.

Air New Zealand confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Christchurch approximately one hour and twenty minutes after takeoff. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members. Passengers were provided with alternative travel arrangements for their journey to Hamilton the following day.

The aircraft involved bears registration ZK-MVH and is part of Air New Zealand's regional fleet configured with up to 68 economy class seats. It first flew in December 2015 and joined Air New Zealand's mainline operations in December 2019.

Air New Zealand continues to rely heavily on its ATR fleet for regional connectivity across New Zealand, linking smaller centers with major cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Christchurch International Airport remains a key hub for both domestic and international flights, serving various long-haul carriers including Emirates and Singapore Airlines.
