Mongolia's Hunnu Air is set to expand its fleet with the addition of a leased Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, as reported by ch-aviation and independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie from Singapore. The new aircraft is expected to join the airline's existing fleet in March 2025.

Currently, Hunnu Air operates a small fleet consisting of one ATR 42-500 turboprop and two Embraer E190s. The incoming E195-E2 will be the largest in their lineup, offering seating for up to 132 passengers in a single-class configuration or 120 passengers in a three-class layout, according to Embraer. This addition will allow Hunnu Air to explore longer-range routes, as the E195-E2 can travel up to 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 km).

Hunnu Air currently serves five destinations across China, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. These include Beijing, Hailar, and Manzhouli in China; Murun in Mongolia; and Almaty in Kazakhstan. Plans are underway for twice-weekly flights to Kobe, Japan starting mid-2025.

Founded in December 2011 as Mongolian Airlines Group before rebranding in April 2013 to avoid confusion with MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Hunnu Air has seen various changes over the years. Supported by Mongolyn Alt MAK and Bodi Group, it began operations after acquiring Monnis Air Services' Antonov An-2 biplanes and later added Fokker 50 aircraft. In 2013, it expanded into long-haul flights with Airbus A319s but financial challenges led to repossession of these aircraft.

Mongolia's aviation sector remains relatively small but is experiencing growth. The country hosts five airlines: MIAT Mongolian Airlines (the national carrier), Hunnu Air, Eznis Airways, Mongolian Airways, and Aero Mongolia. While MIAT plans further expansion with additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners aimed at US routes like San Francisco by 2028.

Brendan Sobie notes that all Mongolian airlines are seeking new additions to their fleets. For instance, MIAT intends to introduce another CRJ700 this year while replacing an older CRJ200 model.
