The investigation into the crash of Jeju Air flight 2216 is advancing as authorities focus on extracting data from the aircraft's black boxes. While data from the cockpit voice recorder has been successfully retrieved, challenges with the flight data recorder have led Korean officials to send it to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the United States for further analysis.

Authorities are working to uncover details about the accident that occurred in Muan, South Korea. The black boxes are expected to provide critical information about events leading up to the crash. However, damage sustained by the flight data recorder during the incident has complicated efforts to extract its data.

The Korean Herald reported that a missing "connector" essential for data transmission and power supply is hindering local attempts at repair and analysis. Ju Jong-wan, Director of Aviation Policy at South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, noted that while FDRs are sometimes shipped for examination, this one will be sent by air to expedite the process. He emphasized that South Korean investigators will collaborate with NTSB experts rather than conducting a unilateral analysis.

“Repairing the connector or finding a replacement is a complex process that could risk damaging the data if not handled carefully. The most reliable option is to collaborate with the NTSB,” Ju stated.

Progress has been made with extracting information from the cockpit voice recorder. Initial findings reveal communication between pilots and air traffic control regarding an agreed decision to land on an alternate runway. According to reports from The Korean Herald quoting the Transport Ministry: “The air traffic controller guided the pilot to the nearest direction, and the pilot agreed to proceed with the landing attempt.”

The Jeju Air accident resulted in 179 fatalities, marking one of South Korea's deadliest aviation disasters. Two cabin crew members survived. All victims have now been identified by Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.

While bird strike reports emerged as a possible cause shortly before landing, they do not account for why landing gear failed to deploy. Video footage shows a Boeing 737-800 landing on its belly without flaps configured for descent at high speed. Concerns also arise over a concrete wall located 250 meters from runway's end—designed structures meant for impact absorption did not function as intended during this tragedy—raising questions among experts who believe more lives could have been saved without it.
