On January 2, Qatar Airways announced its decision to resume flights to Syria for the first time since 2012. This move follows the recent political changes in Syria with the removal of Bashar al-Assad from power. The airline will be the only major carrier operating in Syria initially, although Turkish Airlines is expected to return soon.

The service between Doha and Damascus will begin on January 7, making Damascus the 180th airport served by Qatar Airways with passenger flights. Initially, this route will be operated three times a week using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The inaugural flight is scheduled for a Tuesday but regular services will occur on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Qatar Airways has historically used smaller aircraft like the A320/A321 for this route, but due to reduced frequency compared to past operations, they are opting for the larger A330 now. Flight numbers QR410 and QR411 have not been previously used by Qatar Airways.

In addition to resuming flights to Damascus, Qatar Airways has expanded its network significantly over recent months. Eleven new destinations were added in 2024 and early 2025 including Abidjan, Osaka, Kinshasa, Lisbon, Tashkent, Venice, Hamburg, Toronto, Abha, and Canberra.

The airline's current network spans across multiple continents with notable concentrations in Asia (52 airports), Europe (47 airports), and Africa (29 airports). Partner airlines' destinations are not included in these figures.

Qatar Airways continues its expansion strategy as it strengthens its global presence across diverse regions.
