Sacramento International Airport, the sole commercial airport serving California's capital, is undergoing a significant transformation with the launch of SMForward, a $1.3 billion expansion project. The airport, originally named Sacramento Metropolitan Airport when it opened in 1967, has grown to include two terminals and is currently served by 12 airlines.

The SMForward project involves seven major expansions: a pedestrian walkway, Terminal B parking garage, new Terminal A exit road, Concourse B expansion, Terminal A expansion, ground transportation center, and consolidated rental car center. These developments aim to accommodate increasing passenger numbers and enhance travel experiences.

The pedestrian walkway project began in August 2024. "This is the first project of our $1.3 billion SMForward program," said Cindy Nichol, Director of Sacramento County Department of Airports. Phil Serna added that the walkway will connect to future concourses.

Construction on the new Terminal B parking garage started in October and is expected to finish by fall 2026. "Today’s groundbreaking is another important step to realize the SMForward vision," noted Congresswoman Doris Matsui.

Terminal A will see a new exit road and an expansion including gates and office space by winter 2027. TJ Chen explained that "SMForward represents the continued implementation of SMF’s master plan."

A new rental car facility is also planned to consolidate services into one building for efficiency. Cindy Nichol emphasized delivering "a world-class rental car experience."

Additionally, although not part of SMForward, a new air traffic control tower was announced in 2023 with funding from the FAA. Congresswoman Matsui has been advocating for this since 2006.
