Delta Air Lines, a major player in the global aviation industry, has introduced significant changes to its SkyMiles frequent flyer program over the past few years. In 2023, Delta announced a major overhaul of the program, which was met with criticism from many frequent flyers who viewed it as a devaluation. This led to some backlash.

The most notable change was the shift from using Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs), Miles, and Segments to a system based solely on money spent with the airline—Medallion Qualifying Dollars. This aligns Delta's program with other airline loyalty programs worldwide but could make achieving frequent flyer status more challenging for those who usually purchase cheaper tickets.

Following feedback from customers, Delta reversed several proposed changes and lowered the spending threshold required for each elite status tier. As of 2024, members need to earn specific amounts of MQDs to reach various elite statuses: $5,000 for Silver Medallion, $10,000 for Gold Medallion, $15,000 for Platinum Medallion, and $28,000 for Diamond Medallion.

Members can earn MQDs by flying with Delta or its partners in the Star Alliance. However, MQDs are not earned on taxes or fees and certain fare types like Basic Economy. Since last year, SkyMiles Members have been able to earn MQDs on Delta Award Travel tickets when flying in Main Cabin or above if booked through direct Delta channels.

Additionally, there are ways to earn MQDs through non-flying activities such as booking Delta Vacations packages. While individual hotel or car rental bookings do not qualify for MQDs unless combined with flights as part of a vacation package.

Delta also leverages its partnership with American Express by offering additional ways to earn elite status through credit card usage. Cardholders receive benefits like MQD Headstart and discounts on award ticket miles prices under initiatives like TakeOff15.

"Delta is focused on creating value for our SkyMiles Members by providing a range of ways to earn and redeem miles," said a spokesperson from Delta Air Lines.

Frequent flyers can also earn bonus MQDs at higher tiers; Platinum members receive $1,000 while Diamond members get $2,000 as part of Choice Benefits selections upon reaching their respective tiers.

Being part of the SkyTeam Alliance allows members to earn points both with cash tickets and when redeeming SkyMiles on partner-operated flights. The number of MQDs varies depending on factors such as distance traveled and class purchased.

In addition to earning traditional SkyMiles through various means—including select promotions—members can now achieve elite status via hotel stays and car rentals booked through Delta Air Lines.

This shift towards revenue-based systems is not unique; British Airways recently announced similar changes within its Executive Club frequent flyer program where Tier Points will be awarded based on money spent rather than distance flown.
