Pittsburgh International Airport, a significant transport hub in southwestern Pennsylvania, has witnessed the closure of its McDonald's outlet after more than three decades of operation. This development was reported by WTAE, which confirmed that the fast-food restaurant ceased operations on December 31, 2024.

The McDonald's at the airport had been a staple for travelers since it opened over 30 years ago. Despite the absence of a specific reason for its closure from the local operator, it was noted that the lease had come to an end. The operator expressed gratitude for serving passengers and assured that meals from McDonald's are still available nearby: "We're proud to have served travelers at the Pittsburgh airport for over 30 years. Unfortunately, Dec. 31 marked our last day open at the airport following the completion of our lease. While closing a restaurant is never easy, we look forward to continuing to serve the community – including those bound for the airport minutes away at our Oakdale location – and creating job opportunities at nearby locations for all our employees impacted by this transition."

While McDonald's has closed within the terminal, new dining options are set to enhance passenger experience. Among these is a revamped Chick-fil-A with increased capacity and an expanded menu. Additionally, Shake Shack is anticipated to be a major attraction as it opens its first location in Pittsburgh.

Historically, Pittsburgh International Airport was once a bustling hub primarily under US Airways (formerly USAir), which operated up to 550 daily flights during its peak. However, following USAir's shift towards hubs in Charlotte and Philadelphia, Pittsburgh no longer serves as a major hub for any airline today.

Currently, Southwest Airlines leads traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport with a market share of 26%. Since beginning operations in May 2005 with routes such as Chicago Midway and Las Vegas among others, Southwest has grown its presence significantly in western Pennsylvania.
