Ukraine is set to accelerate its F-16 pilot training program, reducing the training period by three months. This decision aims to expedite the deployment of pilots on their new aircraft, following the loss of Ukraine's first F-16 during an interception mission. The incident involved a collision with a slow-flying drone, although details remain unclear.

The Kyiv Post reports that Ukraine will shorten the training duration for pilots transitioning to the F-16 Fighting Falcon jets donated by several European countries. The country has already received two batches of these jets from the Netherlands and Denmark but faces challenges in having enough trained pilots ready to operate them.

Deputy Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Serhiy Melnyk highlighted an "expanded and accelerated training program for Ukrainian pilot cadets" aimed at preparing them for fast jet operations. This initiative seeks to offset the reduction in overall F-16 training time by ensuring trainees are thoroughly assessed before advancing.

Despite being one of the most popular fighter jets globally, transitioning to the F-16 presents hurdles for Ukrainian pilots, particularly regarding English proficiency. Only five pilots were initially deemed proficient enough in English to bypass additional language training.

The British Embassy in Kyiv has been instrumental in providing basic flight, ground, and English-language instruction through "OP Interstorm," which involves Royal Air Force instructors teaching various aircraft handling skills.

In related developments, Ukraine is expected to receive Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets from France by late January. These aircraft have been modified for land attacks and equipped with advanced missiles. It remains uncertain if Greece will contribute some of its retiring Mirage 2000-5s.
