In the world of hotel credit cards, two mid-tier options stand out: the World of Hyatt Credit Card and the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card. Both cards offer unique benefits and features that cater to different types of travelers.

The World of Hyatt card comes with a $95 annual fee, while the Hilton Surpass has a $150 annual fee. These fees are offset by various rewards and perks offered by each card.

For those interested in welcome offers, the Hilton Surpass provides 165,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after spending $3,000 in purchases within the first six months. According to The Points Guy's December 2024 valuations, this is valued at $990. In comparison, the World of Hyatt card offers up to 60,000 bonus points under certain conditions; these points are valued at up to $1,020 based on TPG's valuations.

Both cards offer free night awards but differ in how they are earned. The Hilton Surpass gives a free night reward after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases annually. This can be used at nearly any Hilton property worldwide. The World of Hyatt card provides an annual free night certificate at a Category 1-4 property upon account anniversary and another one after spending $15,000 within a calendar year.

In terms of earning points, both cards have their strengths. The Hilton Surpass earns 12 points per dollar at participating Hilton hotels and varying rates for other categories like dining and gas stations in the U.S., while the World of Hyatt earns four points per dollar at its hotels and different rates for categories such as transit and dining.

Elite status benefits also differ between these cards. The Hilton Surpass offers automatic Gold status with potential upgrades to Diamond status based on spending thresholds. Meanwhile, the World of Hyatt cardholders receive Discoverist status with benefits like late checkout and preferred rooms.

Ultimately, choosing between these two cards may depend on brand loyalty and personal travel preferences. "At the end of the day," notes The Points Guy's analysis, "the card that is better suited for you may come down to brand and loyalty preference."
