Park Sang-woo, South Korea's Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, announced his intention to resign following the Jeju Air crash on December 29, 2024. The accident resulted in the deaths of 179 out of 181 individuals on board a Boeing 737-800.

In a press briefing on January 7, Sang-woo expressed his deep sense of responsibility for the tragedy. He stated that he would step down after managing the current crisis and once political stability returns to the country. The announcement was reported by Reuters.

The incident occurred when a Jeju Air flight attempted to land at Muan International Airport with its landing gear up. The aircraft skidded along the runway before crashing into a concrete structure. Of those onboard, only two flight attendants survived.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol had declared martial law earlier in December, leading to political turmoil including impeachment votes and accusations of treason against several officials.

Kim Yi-bae, CEO of Jeju Air, offered condolences and acknowledged responsibility for the crash while awaiting an official investigation outcome. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has initiated safety inspections across South Korea's fleet of Boeing 737-800s and extended Muan International Airport's closure until January 14.

The Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board completed the cockpit voice recorder transcript and sent the flight data recorder to the United States for analysis with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board.
