China's military exercises in October 2024, involving a record deployment of 125 aircraft, have intensified tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The maneuvers by the People’s Liberation Army Navy simulated blockades around Taiwan, coming shortly after Taiwan's National Day celebrations where President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed Taiwan's sovereignty.

In response to growing threats from China, Taiwan is focusing on modernizing its air defense capabilities. This includes acquiring new aircraft and enhancing defensive systems through joint exercises aimed at strengthening security.

The Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) is preparing to receive Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 70/72 “Vipers.” Taiwanese pilots are already training with United States Air Force personnel. These upgrades promise advanced radar capabilities for various mission profiles. "For the past 30 years, the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) has defended its skies with Lockheed Martin products," stated a representative from Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed Martin's involvement extends beyond delivering aircraft; they have established an Industrial Cooperation Agreement with Taiwan’s Industrial Development Bureau to enhance local industry capabilities.

Taiwan introduced its first domestically produced jet trainer, the AT-5 Brave Eagle, in 2024. The ROCAF consists of eight squadrons flying F-16s, Dassault Mirage 2000s, and F-CK-1 jets. They also operate C-130H Hercules planes set for modernization under the “Taiwu Mountain III” project.

Allied support through foreign military sales and joint training exercises has strengthened Taiwan's air force despite being outnumbered by China's forces. Recent developments include potential acquisition of AV-8B Harrier II jets and new anti-air missile batteries approved by the US.

The outlook for 2025 indicates a more robust air force for Taiwan amid ongoing challenges posed by China's military activities.
