JetBlue Airways is set to reintroduce its Airbus A220 aircraft on the New York-Vancouver route, according to reports. This move comes as the airline seeks to innovate and refine its business model following financial challenges from a failed merger with Spirit Airlines. The carrier aims to balance supply and demand across short and medium-haul routes for better profitability.

The airline has been downsizing operations, focusing on markets where it holds a competitive edge. It scaled back its network at Los Angeles International Airport and is shifting many routes from larger Airbus A320 family jets to the smaller Airbus A220.

Aeroroutes reports that JetBlue will switch from using the A321 to the A220 on its summer 2025 transcontinental service between Boston Logan International Airport and Vancouver International Airport. Previously operated by A321 jets, this seasonal service will now feature fewer seats on the A220, running from June 12th through September 2nd, 2025. JetBlue will continue year-round direct service from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Vancouver with the A321.

The new nonstop service will operate during daytime hours outbound, with Flight 049 departing Boston at 4:30 PM and arriving in Vancouver at 7:35 PM local time. The return flight, Flight 050, departs Vancouver at 8:40 PM and arrives in Boston at 5:00 AM.

Tickets are available on JetBlue's website for these flights, with roundtrip fares starting around $400 in June for restrictive fare options.

This strategic decision reflects JetBlue's efforts to optimize seat capacity by reducing premium offerings on this route. The former configuration of the A321 included a Mint business class cabin with 160 seats total; however, the new all-economy setup of the A220-300 offers only 140 seats. This shift may indicate weaker demand for premium tickets or a strategic redeployment of premium seating elsewhere for better revenue generation.

JetBlue continues to adapt its operational network as part of broader changes planned throughout 2025.
