Indianapolis International Airport (IND) marked a significant year in 2024, achieving several milestones that reinforced its role as a key hub in the Midwest. With extensive service across the United States and beyond, IND saw notable developments involving major airlines.

Southwest Airlines emerged as the largest operator at Indianapolis, accounting for 28% of the airport's traffic. Although not a hub for Southwest, the airline has maintained a substantial presence since entering the market in 1989. Today, it operates up to 53 daily departures to various destinations, employing over 270 people at its Indianapolis station.

Other airlines like American Airlines and Delta Air Lines also play important roles at IND. Republic Airways stands out as the third-largest operator by partnering with multiple major carriers and handling nearly 14% of airport traffic.

In August 2024, IND received $26.6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration as part of Airport Infrastructure Grants funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This grant contributes to reconstructing Runway 5R-23L and Taxiway D to enhance safety and capacity. "This project is a significant investment in the future of aviation operations at IND," said IAA Executive Director Mario Rodriguez.

On August 22, Southwest Airlines announced new nonstop flights between Indianapolis and Nashville starting March 6, 2025. Maggie Cunningham from IAA highlighted this development: “This flight will connect business and leisure travelers to the Music City.”

The airport commemorated September 11 with an annual ceremony honoring victims and first responders. Keith Berlen emphasized: “This day is dedicated to honor so many – for their courage...and bravery."

On September 18, Indianapolis was ranked #1 among US midsize airports by J.D. Power for customer satisfaction—the seventh time it achieved this distinction.

In October, Aer Lingus announced direct flights from Indianapolis to Dublin using Airbus A321XLR aircraft beginning May next year—a move praised by Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb: “Reopening a much needed...transatlantic route...will once again open new opportunities.”

November brought further growth when Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air introduced new routes on November 20—Frontier adding services to Atlanta and Tampa while Allegiant launched flights to Portland.

Finally, December marked a milestone with IND recording its ten millionth passenger for the year—a testament to ongoing expansion efforts anticipated into 2025.
