Spain's regional airline, Air Nostrum, is set to become the launch customer for the Airlander 10 airship. The airline plans to deploy these airships on regional tourist routes across Spain. This development marks a potential shift in aviation as airlines consider integrating airships into their fleets alongside traditional aircraft.

The Airlander 10, developed by Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), was initially designed for the US Army's Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle program. After the program's cancellation, HAV continued its development for civilian use, particularly targeting luxury tourism. In 2022, HAV announced that Air Nostrum Group had reserved ten of these airships for delivery in 2026.

"By enhancing both passenger and freight connectivity, Airlander complements existing transport networks, ensuring the region’s growth is both sustainable and well-connected," stated HAV.

In partnership with City of Doncaster Council, HAV announced a new 50-hectare site at Carcroft Common in Doncaster in early 2024. This facility will focus on production, testing, and certification operations for the airship and is expected to produce up to 24 units annually.

Airlander's design includes features such as floor-to-ceiling windows and an unpressurized cabin. It offers low noise and vibration levels, aiming to provide a unique travel experience akin to a cruise or hot air balloon ride. The airship can carry up to 100 passengers or ten tonnes of freight while reducing carbon emissions by up to 75% compared to similar aircraft.

"With ability to land on and take off vertically from grass fields and water, HAV markets Airlander 10 as suitable for a variety of roles, including cargo, surveillance, regional transport and VIP travel. Its first three production slots are reserved for unnamed luxury tourism operators," reported Flight Global.

Despite being in pre-production as of late 2024, HAV has secured over £1.4 billion ($1.75 billion) in reservations for the Airlander 10 during that year. The company aims to introduce electric motors by replacing two engines with them by 2028 and plans an all-electric variant by 2030.

Air Nostrum intends to utilize these airships on short-haul routes from Spain's Mediterranean Balearic Islands starting in 2026. The airline has doubled its order to support expansion into the Mediterranean region.

In conclusion, while it remains uncertain if airships will significantly impact short-haul flights or tourism, they offer a promising eco-friendly transportation option. Their ability to carry outsized loads could also play a crucial role in future logistics solutions.
