Japan Airlines has taken a step toward enhancing fuel efficiency by applying a riblet-shaped coating to one of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. This initiative is part of the airline's broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions in aviation. The riblet design, inspired by shark skin, features fine grooves that align with airflow, reducing drag and improving aircraft efficiency.

The coating was applied using the Paint-to-Paint method, developed by O-Well and JAXA. This technique uses a water-soluble mold to create irregularities on existing paint, offering advantages over traditional decal or film methods by increasing durability and decreasing weight.

Previously tested on Japan Airlines' short-haul Boeing 737 fleet from July 2022 to November 2023, the riblet technology demonstrated enhanced fuel efficiency. Now applied to an international route-operating Dreamliner, it shows promise for further environmental benefits.

Wind tunnel tests conducted by JAXA confirmed a reduction in drag on a model Boeing 787-9 fuselage. Japan Airlines expects this innovation to cut CO2 emissions by 381 tons and reduce fuel consumption by 119 tons annually based on flights between Tokyo Narita and Frankfurt.
