Emirates is on track to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, marking a significant step toward inclusive air travel. The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) will formally award this designation, which signifies progress for travelers with autism and sensory sensitivities. By early 2025, more than 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff are expected to complete specialized training, with further services and standards to be introduced throughout the year.

For individuals on the autism spectrum, air travel can present challenges due to sensory issues. A survey by AutismTravel.com revealed that 78% of families hesitate to travel, while 94% would consider more trips if staff were trained in autism awareness. Emirates’ initiative aims to support these families and aligns with Dubai’s goal of becoming the most accessible global destination.

The Autism Certified Airline designation is awarded to airlines that meet specific criteria for supporting passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities. Emirates collaborated with IBCCES on comprehensive research involving over 14,000 individuals with disabilities, feedback from 1,200 industry professionals, and audits of flights. This led to a data-driven approach in establishing new aviation standards covering all journey stages from check-in to in-flight services.

As part of certification efforts, Emirates staff are undergoing extensive training focused on autism and sensory-awareness. This program provides crew and ground personnel with skills to better understand neurodiverse travelers' needs. Building upon prior training completed by 23,000 staff in 2023, the curriculum emphasizes recognizing sensory triggers and creating a welcoming experience for all passengers.

Beginning in 2025, Emirates plans to introduce new services tailored for travelers with sensory sensitivities. These include digital Sensory Guides offering information about sensory environments at airports and onboard flights as well as Sensory Products like fidget toys designed to enhance passenger comfort during travel.

Emirates is collaborating closely with Dubai Airports, Dubai Tourism, among others aiming at advancing accessible travel initiatives further. In December 2023 Dubai International Airport became the first international airport certified as an Autism Center; together they aspire towards making Dubai the first Certified Autism Destination within Eastern Hemisphere.

IBCCES remains a leader globally providing training certification concerning autism cognitive disorders through programs empowering organizations towards fostering inclusive environments beneficially impacting neurodiverse individuals worldwide via platforms such as AutismTravel.com connecting families certified destinations ensuring broader inclusivity traveling experiences globally.

This partnership positions Emirates uniquely leading advancements accessibility air-travel setting fresh benchmarks industry-wide facilitating possible seamless journeys everyone involved.
