Disney Cruise Line is taking a different approach in the family-friendly cruising industry by introducing smaller ships to its fleet. The company announced that three new ships, set to debut between 2029 and 2031, will be about 20% larger than Disney Magic, its smallest ship. This marks a departure from the trend of building ever-larger vessels seen with other cruise lines.

Currently operating six ships, Disney's fleet is expected to expand significantly from the four ships it had before the addition of Disney Wish in 2022 to 13 by 2031. The new class of ships will accommodate up to 3,000 guests and measure approximately 100,000 gross tons, making them about 30% smaller by gross tonnage than the Wish Class ships like Disney Wish and Disney Treasure.

Thomas Mazloum, president of New Experiences Portfolio & Disney Signature Experiences, stated: "As we expand our fleet, it is important that we continue to provide a variety of experiences for our guests. Families enjoy the diversity of vacations we offer... They also expect to explore a broad range of destinations."

Disney's decision comes as some ports impose limits on cruise ship capacity. Smaller vessels could offer more itinerary options compared to larger ones. Additionally, maintaining unique onboard experiences might be easier with fewer passengers.

While Disney focuses on smaller ships for these upcoming launches, it will also introduce its largest ship yet later this year — Disney Adventure — which can hold up to 6,700 passengers and is intended for an Asian market based out of Singapore.
