Edi Wolfensberger Chief Operating Officer | Eurowings

Germany's second-largest airline, Eurowings, is set to undergo a significant fleet modernization with the acquisition of 40 new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. This decision comes as part of Lufthansa Group's strategy to equip its value airline with state-of-the-art jets that promise lower fuel consumption and noise emissions. The new aircraft are expected to consume up to 30 percent less kerosene, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions.

The investment for these aircraft amounts to approximately five billion dollars at list price, marking it as the largest sustainability project in Eurowings' history. The first delivery is scheduled for 2027, with all 40 jets expected by 2032. These planes will replace older Airbus models and offer increased passenger capacity and range.

Eurowings has been recognized as Germany's largest leisure airline and maintains a strong market presence at several major airports including Dusseldorf and Hamburg. The introduction of the Boeing 737-8 MAX is anticipated to enhance the travel experience with redesigned cabins and more comfortable seating.

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this move: “Eurowings has established itself as the European point-to-point airline of the Lufthansa Group with a convincing strategy and thanks to its outstanding employees in an extremely competitive market.”

Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, highlighted the dual focus on economic success and ecological responsibility: “With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundations for a successful Eurowings future that is geared towards ambitious sustainability goals.”
