Lufthansa Group has allocated its order for 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to its low-cost carrier, Eurowings. The decision marks a significant fleet modernization for the German airline, with the first delivery expected in 2027.

In a statement, Eurowings highlighted that this move is "one of the largest fleet modernizations in European aviation." By 2032, Boeing is scheduled to complete all deliveries. The new aircraft will gradually replace Eurowings' existing Airbus A319ceo and A320ceo planes, offering more seating capacity.

The investment is valued at around five billion dollars at list price, making it "the largest and most expensive sustainability project in the more than 30-year history of Eurowings," according to the airline. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 promises fuel savings and reduced emissions compared to the older models.

Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, stated that these aircraft are crucial for achieving ambitious sustainability goals and maintaining competitive fares. Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group, praised Eurowings' strategy within the group's short-haul network as both effective and promising.

With these changes, Eurowings plans to enhance its medium-haul flight offerings. This segment has seen growth from 686 weekly flights in July 2019 to over 1,300 by July 2025.

The decision aligns with Lufthansa Group's December 2023 order for new-generation single-aisle aircraft—40 Airbus A220-300s and an equal number of Boeing 737 MAX 8s. While initially undisclosed which airlines would receive them, it was later revealed that Lufthansa City Airlines would take on the Airbus orders.

Eurowings also announced cabin upgrades for enhanced passenger comfort and deactivated its official account on X without providing reasons.
