Boeing has joined forces with Norsk e-Fuel to support the development of one of Europe's first large-scale Power-to-Liquids (PtL) facilities. This partnership aims to boost the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordic region and worldwide. The initiative aligns with the commercial aviation industry's goal, alongside ICAO member states, to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Norsk e-Fuel plans to produce electro-SAF or e-SAF through a process that uses fossil-free power to generate green hydrogen, which is then combined with recycled CO₂ from biogenic sources. This method can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air travel by over 90% compared to traditional jet fuel.

Steve Gillard, Boeing's regional sustainability director for Europe, Middle East, Türkiye, Africa, and Central Asia stated: "Our support of and collaboration with Norsk e-Fuel underscores the importance of using fossil-free energy to accelerate SAF production, which is key to reducing aviation’s carbon emissions towards 2050." He added that this partnership would help increase SAF accessibility globally.

In 2024, SAF accounted for only 0.53% of global commercial fuel use. The RefuelEU SAF initiative in Europe aims to increase this share gradually, targeting 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Sub-mandates for e-SAF are also in place, aiming for a target of 1.2% in 2030 and increasing to 35% by 2050.

Boeing's investment will contribute toward meeting these EU commitments while enhancing national energy security across the Nordics. It will also aid in shaping policies that ensure the economic viability of the global SAF industry.

Lars Bjørn Larsen, CCO of Norsk e-Fuel said: "Our goal is to make e-fuels competitive with and eventually replace fossil fuels in critical infrastructures as SAF needs to become readily accessible and affordable for advancing aviation’s decarbonization." He emphasized that Boeing's investment would accelerate their project pipeline.

The partnership brings together Boeing's expertise in SAF with Norsk e-Fuel's technological capabilities and partnerships including Norway's largest air carrier, Norwegian. Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian remarked: "We are pleased to welcome Boeing on board. Their investment marks a significant milestone for Norsk e-Fuel and confirms the positive development we have had."

As a major aerospace company operating globally, Boeing continues its commitment towards sustainability while supporting community impact through innovation aligned with its core values.
