American Airlines is set to expand its route map by introducing a new service to Columbus, Mississippi. The Fort Worth-based airline will begin this service on May 5, marking its first-ever flights to the region. This development was initially observed in Cirium schedules and later confirmed by an American Airlines spokesperson.

The airline plans to operate once-daily flights from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Golden Triangle Regional Airport (GTR). The route will be served by American Eagle subsidiary SkyWest Airlines using a CRJ-700 regional jet. This aircraft has a capacity of 65 seats, including nine first-class seats, 12 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 44 standard economy seats.

Golden Triangle Regional Airport serves the area known as the Golden Triangle in Mississippi, which includes Columbus, West Point, and Starkville—the home of Mississippi State University. Delta Air Lines has been the dominant carrier in this region for decades, connecting GTR with up-to-four-times-daily flights to its Atlanta hub.

American's expansion into smaller cities is part of a broader strategy to capture more connecting traffic through its major hubs such as Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), DFW, and Miami International Airport (MIA). Recent additions include destinations like Carlsbad, California; Provo, Utah; and South Caicos in Turks and Caicos.

An airline spokesperson stated: "American Airlines will start offering nonstop flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Golden Triangle Regional Airport starting May 5, operated by SkyWest. Customers will be able to connect on American's expansive network to more than 230 destinations from DFW."

This move comes after significant cuts during the pandemic when major U.S. airlines collectively dropped numerous domestic cities from their networks. With travel demand rebounding post-pandemic, airlines are revisiting some of these smaller markets.

Locals stand to benefit from increased access to a wider range of destinations with potentially lower fares due to added competition.
