Long Beach Airport diverts 35 tons of organic waste through recycling program

Long Beach Airport has successfully diverted 35 tons of organic waste from landfills through its food scrap recycling program, initiated in late 2021. This effort is part of the airport's broader sustainability initiatives.

Mayor Rex Richardson stated, "As a City committed to sustainability, Long Beach is proud to see our award-winning Airport undertaking innovative waste diversion initiatives that have already diverted a whopping 35 tons of waste that otherwise would have wound up in a landfill."

The program, in partnership with LGB concessionaire Paradies Lagardere, focuses on reducing organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Food scraps from airport dining concessions are collected and processed at designated facilities for composting.

Airport Director Cynthia Guidry remarked, “Food scrap recycling is just one piece in Long Beach Airport’s broader commitment to sustainability. We’re grateful to our concession operators for their partnership in continuing to set higher standards for environmentally conscious and efficient operations.”

This initiative aligns with California's sustainability laws, including Assembly Bill 1826 and State Senate Bill 1383. These regulations require commercial entities to divert organic waste and aim for significant reductions by 2025.

The airport’s efforts are supported by the City of Long Beach’s Residential Organics Collection program and the Green Restaurant Association certification achieved by all Paradies Lagardere concessions at LGB.
