Hawaiian Airlines is set to introduce its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route between Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The change, which begins on April 22 and runs through August 20, replaces the Airbus A330-200 that has traditionally serviced this 4,983-mile domestic route.

The introduction of the Dreamliner brings a significant upgrade for business-class passengers, offering a 34-seat lie-flat cabin with pods arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. This setup provides more privacy compared to the previous A330's 2-2-2 arrangement with only 18 seats. The increase in premium capacity may also facilitate upgrades or mileage redemptions for first-class seats, although initial checks have not shown increased availability.

Passengers seated in economy will experience some modern amenities of the Dreamliner such as lower pressurization and mood lighting. However, they might find the industry-standard 3-3-3 layout less favorable than the A330's 2-4-2 configuration preferred by couples and families.

An airline spokesperson expressed enthusiasm about the new deployment: "We are excited to bring our Dreamliner to New York in late April and operate it throughout the summer. Our guests traveling between New York and Honolulu will enjoy the warm Hawaiian hospitality of our crew and award-winning service in the elevated comfort of our 787 cabin."

Despite these enhancements, one downside remains: Hawaiian's Boeing 787s currently lack internet access due to pending Starlink satellite Wi-Fi installation across much of its fleet.

Hawaiian Airlines has mainly operated its Dreamliners on West Coast routes to Hawaii until now. This move marks an expansion of their usage as they plan to welcome three more aircraft this year.

The strategy could shift again following Alaska Airlines' takeover; however, travelers between New York and Hawaii can expect an upgraded experience for now.
