LAX PUPs at the Rose Bowl firefighters camp | X

LAX PUPs, a program featuring therapy dogs aimed at providing stress relief to travelers, recently visited the firefighter camp at the Rose Bowl. This camp was established for first responders as a gesture of appreciation for their efforts in protecting lives, property, and communities. The announcement was made on X on January 15.

According to Fire Rescue 1, the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, was transformed into a temporary base camp for thousands of firefighters responding to the Eaton Fire. The stadium's expansive parking areas and infrastructure enabled it to host essential facilities such as sleeping quarters, dining stations, and medical tents. The camp also offered food, hygiene facilities, and a command center for coordination among firefighting units. Temporary staging areas were set up for fire engines and equipment maintenance.

The Eaton Fire began burning in Los Angeles County in early January 2025 and had scorched more than 14,000 acres by mid-January. Strong winds and dry conditions contributed to the fire's spread, leading to large-scale evacuations in nearby areas. Firefighting crews from multiple agencies were deployed to contain the blaze using aircraft, bulldozers, and ground crews to establish containment lines. According to Fire Rescue 1, the Rose Bowl Stadium was designated as a temporary staging and recovery site due to its central location and capacity to accommodate large numbers of responders.

The LAX Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUP) program was launched in April 2013 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with the goal of providing stress relief and emotional support to travelers. Managed by the airport’s Guest Services Division in partnership with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs—a national therapy dog organization—the program consists of trained therapy dogs and their handlers who walk through airport terminals wearing red vests labeled "Pet Me," according to Los Angeles World Airports.

As per its website, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary airport serving Los Angeles, California, and ranks among the busiest airports globally. Operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a department of the City of Los Angeles, LAX spans approximately 3,500 acres with nine passenger terminals. In 2019 alone, it handled over 88 million passengers.
