Rachel Reeves Chancellor of Exchequer in the UK | Wikipedia

Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, has confirmed government support for Heathrow Airport's expansion plans. The proposed addition of a third runway is seen as crucial for economic growth and increased connectivity. In a speech on January 29, Reeves stated that "a third runway at Heathrow Airport would result in economic growth and make the UK more open and connected."

Reeves emphasized that recent reforms to speed up planning processes and modernize airspace have set the stage for this project’s success. She invited stakeholders to submit proposals by summer and assured swift legislative review of the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS) to align with legal, environmental, and climate obligations.

The government's statement highlighted potential job creation, with 100,000 jobs locally and significant economic benefits nationwide. Reeves noted that no full-length runway has been built in Britain since the 1940s.

London Gatwick Airport also seeks expansion by converting its Northern Runway into an operational one. Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, is expected to announce her decision soon.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Heathrow, welcomed Reeves' support. He said, "Heathrow is the UK’s gateway to growth and prosperity." The new runway would unlock investment opportunities and enhance trade and tourism across the UK.

The airport acknowledged policy changes are necessary for successful delivery, focusing on airspace modernization and regulatory reforms. Heathrow committed to engaging local communities respectfully during this process.

Currently among the world's most congested airports, Heathrow's air transport movements have remained largely unchanged from previous years despite record passenger numbers in December 2024.
