Fleet modernization is an essential process for airlines, enabling them to maintain flight schedules while introducing newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft. This transition often results in the retirement of older models. TUIfly is among those updating their fleet with Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Boeing 787-8/-9 Dreamliner jets. These new aircraft offer better fuel efficiency and passenger experiences, prompting the retirement of TUI's last Boeing 767.

TUI's final revenue flight for the Boeing 767 occurred in November 2024, under service OR1605 from Lanzarote Airport to Amsterdam. The journey marked the end of its operational history with TUI. The aircraft had been in service since February 2000, flying for various carriers before joining TUI Netherlands. It featured a configuration of 31 business class seats and 264 economy seats.

Upon reaching Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the aircraft was celebrated for its years of service before heading to Istanbul for modifications. It then embarked on its final voyage to Pinal Airpark in Arizona for storage. A TUI employee confirmed via LinkedIn that it would remain there unless acquired by a new owner.

The climate at Pinal Airpark offers ideal conditions for storing retired aircraft due to low humidity and minimal wildlife threats, which reduces corrosion risks. Some businesses at the airport also provide maintenance and fueling services.

The retired Boeing 767-300ER, registered as PH-OYJ, accumulated significant flight time over its career—95,984 hours across 17,184 cycles—and was primarily used on medium-haul routes averaging five hours and thirty-five minutes per stage length. Its market value is estimated at $15 million.

While TUI has phased out this model in favor of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, over fifty active examples still operate within Europe with other carriers like Austrian Airlines and Icelandair continuing their use.
