United Airlines is seeking to expand its operations at Chicago O'Hare International Airport by requesting six additional gates. This move comes as the airline aims to strengthen its position in key domestic and international markets, following a successful financial year in 2024.

The request was reported by WGN9, a local news outlet in Chicago. United currently operates 52% of departing flights from O'Hare but only has access to 48% of the airport's gates. The airline believes that this discrepancy allows it to activate a clause in its lease agreement for more gate space.

United plans to use the additional gates not only to alleviate congestion but also to launch two new long-haul international services from O'Hare. The expansion aligns with United's strategy of dominating high-demand travel destinations, particularly those frequented by business travelers.

Omar Idris, Vice President at Chicago O'Hare for United Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion: "Our growth is not just beneficial for United’s customer and employees; it also contributes significantly to the economy of Chicago and Illinois as a whole."

If approved by the city, this expansion will enable United to enhance its presence at O'Hare and offer more destinations. However, American Airlines may oppose this allocation due to its own interests at the airport.
