JetBlue has announced the termination of its flights between Boston Logan International Airport and New York LaGuardia Airport. This decision is part of the airline's JetForward strategy, which aims to strengthen its leisure network on the East Coast. The rising airport fees at LaGuardia have made it challenging for JetBlue to maintain low fares while remaining profitable on this route.

A spokesperson from JetBlue stated that "the airport fees charged to JetBlue at LGA have risen sharply – now about $50 per traveler – which make it impossible for us to offer the low fares customers expect while maintaining profitability on this route." Despite discontinuing this service, JetBlue will continue operations between Boston and New York through John F. Kennedy International Airport.

JetBlue plans to redeploy three takeoff and landing slots from LaGuardia to leisure markets and lease three others to an undisclosed airline. The company remains committed to serving New York travelers and is in discussions with the Port Authority regarding cost reductions at both LaGuardia and Newark airports.

Porter Airlines recently announced new services between Toronto Pearson International Airport and New York LaGuardia, starting May 1. These flights may be utilizing some of the slots leased by JetBlue, as Porter Airlines aims to provide connections via Toronto-Pearson.

According to Cirium's Diio Mi airline planning tool, there will be 170 weekly departures on this route in May, with Air Canada offering the most capacity among carriers. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines also provide significant service on this route.

Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, commented during a recent earnings call that high costs at major U.S. airports like those in New York City pose challenges for airlines trying to remain profitable. However, some low-cost carriers continue expanding their services despite these costs. Frontier Airlines has introduced new routes from JFK with promotional fares aimed at budget-conscious travelers.
