Frontier Airlines has submitted a formal application to operate a new route connecting El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia, with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This move would mark Frontier's initial foray into South America if approved by the Civil Aeronautics Authority of Colombia (Aerocivil). The information was reported by Argentina-based aviation news website Aviacionline.

The airline plans to utilize Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo aircraft for twice-weekly flights on this proposed route. Details about the application were also shared on social media by Ishrion Aviation.

"Avianca has always controlled the very competitive air travel market between Puerto Rico and Colombia," notes Aviacionline. However, Frontier's entry could diversify this market. Currently, Avianca offers 10 weekly flights using Airbus A320 aircraft between Bogotá and San Juan. Competition intensified when JetBlue started flights between San Juan and Medellin International Airport in October 2024.

Frontier aims to challenge Avianca's dominance immediately. According to its website, Frontier has established San Juan as a key hub with connections to 15 US cities and nine Caribbean destinations such as Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and St. Thomas.

The addition of the Bogotá route is seen as significant due to the city's status as a major commercial and tourism hub in South America. This new service could enhance business and tourism links between Puerto Rico and Colombia.

The Indigo Partners investment group owns Frontier Airlines along with other low-cost carriers worldwide. If Frontier launches operations in Bogotá, it will be the first time three airlines from Indigo Partners operate in the same market: Volaris flies from Mexico City to Bogotá, while JetSmart operates domestically within Colombia.

As part of its growth strategy across North America and the Caribbean, Frontier announced additional domestic routes set for spring 2025. These include Cincinnati to Punta Cana; Charlotte to Tampa; and Washington Dulles to Las Vegas.

Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operations design at Frontier Airlines, stated: "The addition of these new routes is part of our mission to offer consumers affordable, convenient flight options to a wide variety of destinations throughout the US, Caribbean and beyond." He added that "as we begin 2025," they are launching "the next chapter of The New Frontier."
