Iceland-based low-cost carrier PLAY has made adjustments to its North American network by changing aircraft, resulting in a reduction of capacity on flights to the United States. According to AeroRoutes, PLAY has replaced the Airbus A321neos on routes from Keflavík International Airport to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and New York Stewart International Airport with the A320neo, which offers fewer seats.

These changes will take effect for flights to Baltimore/Washington from June until September and for New York Stewart starting May 10, though some flights will still use the A321neo. In July, PLAY plans to operate three daily flights to North America compared to five in July 2024, when it included a route to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Canada.

Since October 2024, PLAY has been shifting its focus away from connecting flights between Europe and the US via Reykjavík–Keflavík due to Iceland's strengthening leisure market. "The point-to-point part of PLAY’s schedule, primarily flights between Iceland and Southern Europe, has been popular and profitable from the beginning," stated the airline.

PLAY also noted that changes in the North American market have impacted its performance negatively. As a result, they have reduced capacity on transatlantic routes while increasing services from Iceland to Southern Europe. CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson explained that market shifts have led them to concentrate on more successful operations: "In short, we will focus on the aspects of our business that have proven both successful and profitable—namely, transporting passengers between Southern Europe and Iceland."

While PLAY is adjusting its strategy due to increased supply affecting demand for its hub-and-spoke model via Iceland, competitor Icelandair reported an increase in North American revenues. For 2024's fourth quarter results announced January 30th showed revenues grew slightly from $773.4 million in 2023 up till $802 .8 million by year-end alongside overall revenue growth rising marginally higher than before at $1 .57 billion versus previous numbers around about where last seen hovering close under nearly reaching over past twelve months' time span estimates somewhere near
