British Airways is maintaining its commitment to South Africa by continuing double daily flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg using the Airbus A380, the largest commercial aircraft. The airline aims to meet high demand between these cities and enhance connectivity through its hub at Heathrow.

The decision to deploy the A380 on both daily frequencies during winter indicates strong market demand. For summer 2025, British Airways will exclusively use the A380 for this route starting June 1. Previously, only one flight was operated by the A380 while the other used a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Despite increased capacity in summer, seat availability will remain consistent into winter due to ongoing A380 deployment. Cirium data reveals that in October 2025, British Airways will offer 29,078 seats across 62 flights. This number decreases slightly in November but returns to October levels in December and January.

This marks a 30% capacity increase compared to previous schedules, reflecting confidence in sustained demand for Johannesburg flights. The carrier anticipates filling its 469-seat aircraft twice daily with traffic from its network.

Flights BA56 and BA54 operate outbound from London Heathrow, with BA56 departing at 19:45 local time and arriving in South Africa at 5:00 local time. BA54 departs at 22:05 and arrives at 7:35 local time, each taking approximately 11 hours and five minutes.

British Airways' fleet includes 12 Airbus A380s configured for nearly 500 passengers across four classes: First, Club World (business), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), and World Traveller (economy). The aircraft features a range of seating arrangements spread across two decks.
