The journey to airline elite status can seem daunting, especially for those not accustomed to frequent flying. However, one individual discovered that achieving this status was possible through a combination of flights and strategic credit card spending. Before joining The Points Guy (TPG), the writer had little interest in airline elite status but was drawn to the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card, particularly its limited-edition version made from a retired Boeing 747.

This card played a crucial role in helping the writer reach Delta Silver Elite status within a few months of 2024. Delta's modifications to its SkyMiles program further enabled them to secure Gold Medallion status by year's end. The Delta Reserve Amex offers numerous travel benefits such as 15 SkyClub lounge visits annually, priority boarding, and discounts on award travel.

A limited-time offer allows new cardholders to earn 100,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $6,000 within six months of membership—a promotion valued at $1,200 according to TPG's February 2025 valuations.

To qualify for Delta Medallion status as of 2024, members must meet specific Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) thresholds: Silver requires 5,000 MQDs; Gold needs 10,000 MQDs; Platinum demands 15,000 MQDs; and Diamond calls for 28,000 MQDs. Achieving these tiers grants access to enhanced benefits.

Throughout the previous year, the writer accumulated over 3,200 MQDs from flights alone and more than 2,500 MQDs via credit card transactions with their Delta Reserve Amex. Additional perks like an annual MQD Headstart contributed significantly towards reaching their goals.

Despite being a less frequent traveler than many elite flyers, the author managed to enjoy various Medallion benefits such as upgrades and waived fees. Looking ahead into another year with planned trips on Delta Air Lines already booked—these experiences will determine whether they aim for higher tiers or maintain current standing.
