The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently intercepted two firearms within four days at Dayton International Airport. This occurrence is notable given that the airport only detected seven firearms throughout the entire previous year.

On February 3 and February 7, TSA officers discovered a handgun during routine screenings. The discovery of these firearms was promptly reported to the Dayton Airport Police, following standard procedure. This aligns with the TSA's nationwide efforts, where in 2024, they intercepted a total of 6,678 firearms at security checkpoints across various airports.

When a firearm is found at a checkpoint, TSA officers immediately contact local law enforcement. Those caught face severe consequences including a maximum civil penalty of $14,950 and revocation of their TSA PreCheck eligibility for at least five years.

Ohio TSA Federal Security Director Donald Barker emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations: "Passengers should start with an empty bag when packing to ensure they are not bringing any prohibited items to the checkpoint."

To legally transport firearms on aircrafts, passengers must follow specific guidelines outlined by the TSA. Firearms must be unloaded and stored in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage. Additionally, passengers need to declare their firearm at the ticket counter upon checking their luggage.

Compliance with local and international laws regarding firearm possession is crucial for travelers carrying such items. Passengers should also consult relevant authorities like US Customs and Border Protection for further guidance on transporting firearms internationally.
