Alaska Airlines Embraer E175 | Alaska Airlines Website

Earlier this month, an Alaska Airlines flight from Oakland, California, to Portland, Oregon, was canceled following a disruptive incident involving a passenger. A video captured during the event shows a male passenger pulling the hair of a female passenger seated in front of him while a flight attendant attempts to intervene.

The incident occurred on Alaska Airlines flight 2221 as it was preparing to depart from Oakland International Airport for Portland International Airport. The Embraer E175 regional jet returned to the gate and the flight was subsequently canceled. According to reports, the cancellation followed after a flight attendant refused to continue flying and could not be replaced.

Alaska Airlines released a statement regarding the situation: "On Feb. 1, Alaska Airlines Flight 2221, operated by Horizon Air, from Oakland to Portland returned to the gate before departure due to an incident involving a passenger. He appeared to be experiencing a violent medical episode that involved an ongoing physical assault against other passengers and our crew. Our flight attendants' highest responsibility is the safety of guests and crew on board. Our crew responded to this chaotic situation quickly and kept all guests safe until law enforcement could intervene. At this time, the guest in question has been banned from Alaska and Horizon due to the nature of the physical assault."

The aircraft involved was an Embraer E175 registered as N637QX. It later departed Oakland at 14:03 as flight AS9993 and landed in Portland at 15:28 before operating another service from Portland to Bozeman.

Horizon Air operates flights on behalf of Alaska Airlines with its fleet including 44 E175s configured in three classes totaling 76 seats.

In recent years, incidents involving unruly passengers have been closely monitored by authorities such as the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Although there has been an overall decrease in such incidents since early 2021's record highs during COVID-19 pandemic-related tensions, recent data indicates that these occurrences remain significant challenges for airline crews.
