IATA and 123Carbon have announced a collaboration aimed at enhancing interoperability for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries. The partnership will focus on three primary areas: creating a unique identifier and aligning data points for registry exchanges, establishing an information exchange process to prevent double issuance, and developing a dispute resolution process.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasized the importance of user trust in this initiative. She stated, “The transparency that comes with interoperability will ensure that our registries can function cohesively to maximize SAF’s potential to support aviation’s decarbonization. The broader the alignment among registry providers, the better.”

Jeroen van Heiningen, Managing Director of 123Carbon, expressed his company's commitment to market integrity and trust for Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) across various transportation modes. He remarked, “With IATA, we have found a strong partner in the aviation sector that shares our beliefs."

The collaboration invites other SAF stakeholders to join in order to enhance interactions between registries.

IATA plans to launch its SAF Registry in April 2025. This registry aims to standardize the market for SAF certificates by providing comprehensive product and environmental attribute information after registration of each SAF batch. Over 50 organizations are supporting this development effort.

123Carbon offers an independent platform for carbon insetting across all transport modes with over 50 global users. It facilitates fuel suppliers, fleet operators, forwarders, and cargo owners in managing Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs). Additionally, it provides a private Book & Claim solution allowing SAF suppliers and airlines to allocate branded certificates privately.
